La zone naturelle de De Kozakkenput tire son nom d'un bataillon de cosaques de l'armée russe qui y a campé après que les Français aient été chassés. Les Russes s'étaient si mal comportés dans la ville d'Utrecht qu'ils ont dû quitter la ville. Ils ont pu profiter des 30 puits d'eau qui avaient été creusés en 1804 par les troupes franco-bataves. Maintenant, dans la forêt, on peut également trouver des champs de bruyère et de petites parcelles cultivées. C'est aussi le habitat du hibou de l'Éurasie.
