À l'emplacement de cette église se tenait au 11e siècle déjà une église romane en pierre de tuf dédiée à Gertrude de Nivelle. Vers 1200, la nef fut agrandie vers le sud. Ce n'est qu'en 1315 que l'on commença la construction du clocher. En 1325, on attaqua la construction du collatéral nord, tandis qu'environ 1400, on commença la construction du chœur des prêtres et de la crypte. Du côté nord, la chapelle de Notre-Dame fut alors construite, après quoi on commença à travailler sur le transept sud.
