Cadzand (anciennement Cadesand) fait partie des plus anciennes implantations de la Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Elle se trouvait sur une île près du Zwin, entourée d'une "kade" (digue). Lors des inondations de 1394 et 1398 (inondation de Sainte-Élisabeth), de grandes parties de "l'île de Cadzand" ont à nouveau disparu dans la mer et ont été réendiguées. Cadzand est un village circulaire du début du Moyen Âge, avec des maisons concentrées autour de l'église (catholique) pré-gothique du début du XIVe siècle. L'église a été restaurée plusieurs fois et est passée aux mains protestantes au XVIIe siècle. C'est une "église-halle" à deux nefs, où la transition du style roman au gothique est encore visible. Le grand clocher d'origine a été démoli en 1677 et remplacé par un "clocheton" en bois. En 1930, le clocher élégant actuel a été construit par la commune de Cadzand.
