Le vendredi 13 septembre 1918, un grave accident ferroviaire s'est produit près de Weesp. Avec 41 morts et 42 blessés, c'était la plus grande catastrophe ferroviaire de l'histoire néerlandaise jusqu'en 1962, lorsque la catastrophe ferroviaire de Harmelen a eu lieu. Le train express 102 d'Amersfoort à Amsterdam a déraillé près du pont ferroviaire sur le canal Merwede à Weesp et a glissé du talus. Plusieurs wagons en bois ont été réduits en morceaux, entraînant de nombreuses victimes dans ces véhicules.
