Le plateau de Caestert sur la Meuse est un élément paysager marquant de la région. Les Romains ont dû également le remarquer, car ils sont probablement venus s’installer ici dans la période 58-51 av. J.-C. Un camp d’hiver d’une légion et demie, soit 7 000 à 8 000 hommes, y aurait été établi. En 54 av. J.-C. Pendant que les soldats ramassent du bois, c’est probablement ici, sur ce plateau, que les habitants les attaquent. L’homme derrière cela était le Celte Amborix. Amborix dit aux Romains qu’une attaque majeure est imminente pour attaquer tous les camps d’hiver, et il les exhorte à partir. Mais c’est une ruse destinée à piéger les Romains. ET cela se passerait dans la vallée voisine de Jeker.
C’est Jules César lui-même qui a décrit cette histoire dans « Commentarii de bello gallico ».
