Plateau of Caestert

The Plateau of Caestert on the Meuse forms a striking landscape element in the region. The Romans must have noticed it too, because they probably came to settle here in the period 58-51 BC. A winter camp of one and a half legions or 7000 to 8000 men would have been built here. In 54 BC. While the soldiers are gathering wood, probably here on this plateau the locals attack them. The man behind this was the Celt Amborix. Amborix tells the Romans that there is a great attack on tilt to attack all the winter camps, and he urges them to leave. But that's a ruse meant to trap the Romans. AND that would happen in the nearby Jeker Valley.

It was Julius Caesar himself who described this story in "Commentarii de bello gallico".
