Le "père" de Nieuwvliet-Dorp est Jan Adornis. Cet homme d'affaires de Bruges a fondé le village en 1527. Pour cela, il a dû endiguer plusieurs schorres, ce qui a donné naissance à la Polder de St. Jans. Lorsqu'il est arrivé ici, il y avait le Trou Noir. C'était le milieu des trois rivières entre l'île de Cadzand et l'île de Groede. En essence, Nieuwvliet-Dorp est le pont entre ces deux anciennes îles.
