De "vader" van Nieuwvliet-Dorp is Jan Adornis. Deze zakenman uit Brugge stichtte het dorp in 1527. Daarvoor moest hij wel een aantal schorren bedijken waardoor de St. Jans Polder ontstond. Toen hij hier kwam had je het Zwarte Gat. Dat was de middelste van de drie stromen tussen het Eiland van Cadzand en het Eiland van Groede. In wezen is Nieuwvliet-Dorp de brug tussen deze twee voormalige eilanden.
