El "padre" de Nieuwvliet-Dorp es Jan Adornis. Este empresario de Brujas fundó el pueblo en 1527. Para ello tuvo que drenar varias marismas, lo que dio lugar a la Polder de San Juan. Cuando llegó aquí, había el Agujero Negro. Esa era la corriente media de los tres ríos entre la Isla de Cadzand y la Isla de Groede. En esencia, Nieuwvliet-Dorp es el puente entre estas dos antiguas islas.
