Le Boterweg se situe au nord de Stokkum en direction de la frontière allemande. Bien que le nom ‘Boterweg’ apparaisse également dans des endroits éloignés des frontières, on raconte qu'il s'agit ici d'une route de contrebande pour le beurre.
