The Butter Road runs north of Stokkum towards the German border. Although the name ‘Butter Road’ also appears in places far from a national border, the story goes that this was a smuggling route for butter. For a long time, butter in Germany was taxed heavier than in the Netherlands, making smuggling profitable. Take a look at the documentary about butter smuggling.
