La cathédrale de OLV Hemelvaart est l'un des monuments les plus importants d'Évora. Lorsque Évora a été récupérée des musulmans par les chrétiens en 1166, la construction d'une cathédrale dédiée à la Sainte Vierge a immédiatement commencé. La cathédrale a été consacrée en 1204. Le bâtiment présente à la fois des caractéristiques de style roman et gothique et a été régulièrement modifié au fil des siècles. Au 14e siècle, un cloître de pur style gothique a été ajouté. Aux 15e et 16e siècles, on a ajouté le chœur, le pupitre, le baptistère et la chapelle de OLV de la Miséricorde dans un style manuélin. Au 18e siècle, la Capilla Mayor a suivi dans un style baroque.
