Érigé en 2003 en vue de l'Euro 2004 au Portugal, il est le domicile du FC Porto et remplace le Estádio das Antas devenu vétuste. D'une capacité de 50 033 places, il est le troisième plus grand stade du pays après le Estádio José Alvalade et le Estádio da Luz. Le stade accueille de temps à autre la sélection nationale portugaise.
