Donetsk , anciennement nommée Aleksandrovka, Iouzovka et Stalino, est une ville industrielle d'Ukraine et la capitale administrative de l'oblast de Donetsk. Elle comptait 918 536 habitants en 2017 et 1 623 194 pour son agglomération. Donetsk est de fait la « capitale » du Donbass et la première ville industrielle et économique de l'Ukraine.
Le 21 janvier 2015, la ville est entièrement contrôlée par la République populaire de Donetsk, État sécessionniste autoproclamé et non-reconnu qui en fait sa capitale dans le cadre de la guerre du Donbass.
