Hoodoos are the strangely shaped pillars of the canyon, caused by a harder rock protecting the lower lying softer rock. The top rock protects the erosion from the top, so the pillars don't become smaller. The erosion eats the pillar from the sides till they collapse. As a result, you get this kind of heads on top of the pillars. The French geomorphologists called this phenomena 'Dames Coiffées' or 'Ladies with a hairdo'.
