L'explorateur Bartolomeu Dias est passé ici au Cap de Bonne-Espérance en 1488 en tant que premier européen. Il l'a appelé le Cap des Tempêtes en hommage au temps rude qui a conduit ses navires autour de celui-ci. C'est le roi du Portugal pour lequel Dias travaillait qui a changé le nom en quelque chose de plus optimiste : le Cap de Bonne-Espérance.
