François Verdier avait été ,nommé en juin 1943 par le général de Gaulle comme chef régional des Mouvements Unis de la Résistance (MUR) en Midi-Pyrénées. Il avait été arrêté par la Gestapo dans la nuit du 13 au 14 décembre 1943, puis torturé pendant un mois et demi à la prison Saint-Michel ainsi qu' au siège de la police allemande .Refusant de parler après son arrestation, malgré de longues journées de torture, il est conduit discrètement en forêt de Bouconne le 27 janvier 1944 et sauvagement assassiné d'une grenade placée visiblement dans sa bouche.
