La regione di Askeran è una delle otto regioni che compongono la repubblica del Nagorno Karabakh, ora repubblica di Artsakh, e si trova proprio nel cuore dello Stato. Al suo interno sorge la capitale Step'anakert, che tuttavia forma un distretto amministrativo autonomo.
La regione annovera un centro urbano e 41 centri rurali, per una popolazione complessiva di 18 100 abitanti ; l'area totale è di 1221,92 chilometri quadrati .
