La chiesa di Santa Caterina è il terzo edificio ecclesiastico più alto del Belgio e uno dei più alti edifici in mattoni al mondo. La torre è alta 105 metri. La torre in mattoni più alta è quella della Martinskirche a Landshut: 130,6 metri. La seconda torre in mattoni più alta - e la più alta del Belgio - è quella della chiesa di Nostra Signora a Bruges, con i suoi 122,3 metri.
La chiesa di Santa Caterina è anche conosciuta come "Lunga Caterina". È un progetto di Rombout Keldermans, membro della famosa famiglia di architetti Keldermans. Da Alkmaar a Utrecht e Middelburg, da Lier a Hoogstraten, da Zoutleeuw a Tongerlo: ovunque i Keldermans costruiscono chiese e edifici in gotico brabante. Monumenti che fino ad oggi determinano l’aspetto delle nostre città. Basta pensare alla cattedrale di Anversa, alla torre di San Rombaldo a Mechelen, ai municipi di Gand e Leuven.
