Sulla porta del canale della Gentbruggesluis si trova la Sluizenweg (pista ciclabile e pedonale).
Il canale di navigazione che è stato utilizzato fino al 1974 per la navigazione e dove le navi venivano gestite o trasferite da Gand alla Zeeschelde.
La differenza tra bassa e alta marea (livello dell'acqua più basso e più alto) è qui di circa 2 metri.
A bassa marea, la Zeeschelde è qui, a causa del continuo aumento dell'interramento, solo un piccolo ruscello.
Ad ogni alta marea (flusso) qui si deposita sempre uno strato sottile di sabbia e fango.
Il tratto della Schelde tra Melle e Gentbrugge è praticamente completamente interrato.
Dopo il distacco della parte superiore nel 1969 (apertura dell'anello d'acqua intorno a Gand) e poi la chiusura del canale di navigazione a Gentbrugge nel 1982, infatti, non sono stati più effettuati interventi di manutenzione.
