Il fiume ha origine nel comune di Honsfeld nel comune di Büllingen, a 640 metri sopra il livello del mare. Il bacino si trova nelle Alte Ardenne. Baraque Michel, con 674 metri, è uno dei punti più alti del Belgio e fa parte del bacino idrografico dell'Amblève. La foce dell'Amblève vicino a Comblain-au-Pont, d'altra parte, si trova a solo 120 metri. Questo porta l'Amblève ad avere una pendenza molto elevata.
La valle dell'Amblève è soprattutto molto stretta. Vicino a Fond de Quareux, la valle è più stretta, mentre la valle vicino al villaggio di Cheneux è relativamente ampia. La valle è una delle zone più belle delle Alte Ardenne.
