Nel 1994, il 2° Reggimento Guide, un battaglione di carri armati Leopard di Altenrath in Germania, fu sciolto insieme a molte altre unità. Si presentò quindi il problema di conservare il ricco patrimonio di questo glorioso reggimento di cavalleria fondato nel 1874. Il comune di Zelzate si candidò a dare una casa a questo patrimonio. Infatti, il comune era grato al reggimento per i grandi sacrifici che l'unità aveva fatto nella difesa di Zelzate durante la campagna di diciotto giorni nei giorni di maggio del 1940. Il museo rende omaggio al ricco passato del reggimento in tre sale espositive.
