La menzione più antica di Koersel risale al 1166 come Corcela. Il nome potrebbe derivare dalla parola gallo-romana: Curticella, una fusione di curtis e cella. Una spiegazione latina è naturalmente bella, ma una spiegazione germanica per Koersel è probabilmente più plausibile, poiché qui per i romani non c'era molto da raccogliere su questa povera terra sabbiosa... Nel caso di un'origine germanica del nome, Koersel potrebbe derivare da "Cor - sala", che sarebbe l'indicazione per una fattoria di un nobile franca di nome "Cor". Recentemente è stata dimostrata un'altra possibile spiegazione germanica per l'origine di Koersel, ossia un "edificio con torre di guardia".
