I comuni di Merelbeke, Gavere, Melle, Sint-Lievens-Houtem e Oosterzele appartengono parzialmente al paese di Rode. Con il nome 'Rodeland' si conserva il ricordo dell'industria dei mattoni, ora estinta ma un tempo così importante e caratteristica, in quest'area. Per dare alla pietra la necessaria durezza, vennero cotte. Durante il riscaldamento, l'argilla iniziò a fondersi e ad aggregarsi o a sinterizzare. Il mattone assunse così un colore rosso.
