Quanto fosse difficile la situazione in Fiandra durante gli anni di crisi 1845-1850 a causa di cattivi raccolti e colera è splendidamente illustrato da Maarten Van Ginderachter nel suo eccellente libro Arm Vlaanderen:
"A Nederbrakel, nel febbraio 1847, si verificò un vero e proprio afflusso di folla quando un proprietario di cani uccise il suo fedele quattrozampe, lo scuoio e offrì il cadavere in vendita. Si dice che 300 persone si siano avvicinate alla voce che era disponibile carne a buon mercato."
