Alla stazione, Karel van de Woestijne fu per due ore, nel luglio del 1916, "prigioniero" dei tedeschi. Anche se aveva ottenuto il permesso, non poteva entrare nella città di tappa di Gand e dovette aspettare due ore il treno successivo: "Comprai sigari. Assaporai tutti i marchi disponibili. Nel frattempo studiai la stazione: fino ad ora l'avevo disprezzata; ora la trovai straordinariamente ben costruita, perché la prigionia rende indulgenti nel giudicare l'architettura. (...) Mi avventurai verso la sala d’attesa. All'interno di quella sala d’attesa si poteva vedere un bancone monumentale in stile neogotico, dotato di lucenti pompe per la birra."
