Anversa era il centro del humanesimo e della scienza nei Paesi Bassi. Questo si può in gran parte attribuire al francese Cristoforo Plantino, che si stabilì qui come rilegatore e lavoratore del cuoio. Intorno al 1555 passò alla professione di tipografo e lo fece "in tutte le lingue utilizzate nel regno cristiano". Il Museo Plantin-Moretus è l'unico museo al mondo che figura nell'elenco del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO. Le presse tipografiche dell'Officina Plantiniana sono le più antiche conservate al mondo. Il Cabinetto delle stampe contiene una collezione unica di stampe e disegni di maestri antverpiani dal sedicesimo secolo, oltre a una collezione di manoscritti e libri. Nella casa dei patrizi sono appesi numerosi ritratti di famiglia, dipinti dall'amico di casa Rubens.
