Nel 1799 le truppe francesi rimossero tutte le opere d'arte dalla ormai scomparsa Cattedrale di Santo Donato. Una di queste opere era "Madonna con il Canonico Joris van der Paerle" di Van Eyck del 1436. Il 28 aprile 1799 i rivoluzionari francesi vendettero la cattedrale in pubblica asta. Negli anni successivi la cattedrale fu demolita. Durante questa demolizione andò perso anche la tomba di Jan van Eyck.
