Il castello prende il suo nome dai signori 'de Rivieren d’Aerschot' e la parte più antica è la torre quadrata in pietra del XIII secolo. Il castello ha subito diverse ristrutturazioni e ampliamenti ma era completamente trascurato intorno al XVIII secolo e sembrava più una rovina. Dopo essere stato distrutto da diversi incendi, gli ultimi eredi vendettero la proprietà a una società svizzera che la restaurò a costi elevati prima di sfruttarla come luogo per seminari ed eventi. Il castello e il parco sono stati classificati come patrimonio culturale dal 1983 come unico e singolare residuo di origine medievale e stile feudale nella Regione di Bruxelles-Capitale.
