El castillo debe su nombre a los señores 'de Rivieren d'Aerschot' y la parte más antigua es la torre del castillo de piedra cuadrada del siglo XIII. El castillo ha experimentado varias remodelaciones y ampliaciones, pero alrededor del siglo XVIII estaba completamente abandonado y parecía más una ruina. Tras ser destruido por varios incendios, los últimos herederos vendieron el bien a una empresa suiza que lo restauró a un alto costo antes de utilizarlo como lugar para seminarios y eventos. El castillo y el parque están clasificados como patrimonio cultural desde 1983, como el único y singular vestigio de origen medieval y estilo feudal en la Región de Bruselas-Capital.
