The castle derives its name from the lords 'de Rivieren d'Aerschot' and its oldest area is the square stone keep from the 13th century. The castle has been through several renovations and extensions, but by the 18th century it was completely neglected and looked more like a ruin. After being destroyed by several fires, the last heirs sold the property to a Swiss company that restored it at great expense before using it as a centre for seminars and events. Since 1983, the castle and its park have been listed as cultural heritage, as the only and unique remnant of medieval origin and feudal style in the Brussels Capital Region.
