La Congoberg si riferisce ai numerosi carbonai e minatori, che tornavano a casa sporchi di carbone e neri come il petrolio (dal francese houille = carbone) dalle miniere. Vollezele contava molti minatori che andavano alle miniere vallone con il treno (linea ferroviaria 123). La maggior parte dei tagliatori di carbone viveva nel povero villaggio di Achterdenbos.
