Molenstede è conosciuta per la sua ricca vita associativa. La parte inferiore della statuetta "I Buoni Cittadini di Molenstede" si riferisce alla leggenda secondo cui gli abitanti di Molenstede tirarono su dall'acqua il busto di Maria di Diest mentre galleggiava in piedi contro corrente. Questo fu l'inizio della Confraternita di Nostra Signora, la prima associazione di Molenstede. La confraternita poteva portare la statua durante la processione annuale di Diest. La parte superiore della statua – un allegro gruppo a tavola con una fresca birra – è un winks alla attuale vita associativa.
