Gli edifici dell'Istituto San Giuseppe hanno una lunga
preistoria. Dal 1820, il begijnhof si è evoluto in un
centro educativo. Le beguine vi fondarono una scuola di
economia domestica per ragazze povere. Nel 1835, le
insegnanti laiche Maria Teresa e Jeannette Van Heteren si
stabiliscono nel begijnhof. La scuola fu trasformata nel
1850 in una scuola elementare femminile comunale. Le lezioni
si tenevano in due case delle beguine sul lato ovest del
begijnhof. Maria Teresa Van Heteren era la preside. Nel 1848
iniziò la Scuola Normale. Quasi tutte le case delle beguine
lungo Burchtstraat furono utilizzate per questo. Gradualmente,
il numero di allievi crebbe. Un nuovo edificio scolastico fu
inaugurato nel 1904. A seguito di un'espansione nel 1914,
la scuola assunse le sue dimensioni attuali.
