Il quartiere De Ruiter deve il suo nome alla locanda omonima. Come suggerisce il nome, il cavallo e il suo cavaliere sono i simboli logici di questo quartiere. In occasione dei 40 anni di attività del quartiere, nel 2013 è stata svelata la statua 'Cavallo e Cavaliere' di Isidoor Goddeeris. Essi rivolgono il loro sguardo verso il centro di Roeselare.
La poesia "Cavaliere a Cavallo" è stata scritta da Jef Soenens.
Jef Soenens (°1945), attivo fino a poco tempo fa come insegnante nella scuola speciale, ha vissuto per anni nel quartiere De Ruiter e si sente ancora fortemente legato ad esso. Questo si è tradotto, tra l'altro, in numerosi lavori storici su De Ruiter. Così ha scritto tra l'altro sulla scuola, la cappella del quartiere e alcune cappelle campestri.
