Dadizele è un noto luogo di pellegrinaggio sin dal XV secolo - i pellegrini adorano la statua in alabastro di Nostra Signora con bambino. Nel 1854 il Vaticano proclama il dogma dell'Immacolata Concezione. Per celebrarlo, monsignor Malou, vescovo di Bruges, desidera costruire una chiesa monumentale per tutta la sua diocesi. Dadizele viene scelta e i lavori per l'edificio neogotico iniziano nel 1857. Papa Leone XIII nel 1882 conferisce alla chiesa il titolo di basilica: accanto alla Cappella del Sangue Santo a Bruges, l'unica basilica della diocesi. La basilica è ancora molto frequentata durante i mesi di pellegrinaggio di maggio e settembre.
