Dadizele ist seit dem 15. Jahrhundert ein bekanntes Wallfahrtsort - Pilger kommen, um die alabasterne Statue von Unsere Liebe Frau mit Kind zu verehren. Im Jahr 1854 verkündet der Vatikan das Dogma der Unbefleckten Empfängnis. Um dies zu feiern, möchte Monsignore Malou, Bischof von Brügge, eine monumentale Kirche für sein ganzes Bistum bauen. Dadizele wird ausgewählt und die Arbeiten am neugotischen Gebäude beginnen 1857. Papst Leo XIII. verleiht der Kirche 1882 den Status einer Basilika: neben der Heilig-Blut-Kapelle in Brügge die einzige Basilika des Bistums. Die Basilika wird nach wie vor stark besucht während der Wallfahrtsmonate Mai und September.
