Dadizele ha sido un conocido lugar de peregrinación desde el siglo XV - los peregrinos van a adorar la imagen de alabastro de Nuestra Señora con el niño. En 1854, el Vaticano proclama el dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción. Para celebrarlo, monseñor Malou, obispo de Brujas, quiere construir una iglesia monumental para toda su diócesis. Se elige Dadizele y los trabajos en el edificio neogótico comienzan en 1857. El Papa León XIII concede en 1882 a la iglesia el estatus de basílica: junto a la Capilla de Sangre en Brujas, la única basílica de la diócesis. La basílica sigue siendo muy visitada durante los meses de peregrinación en mayo y septiembre.
