Il precedente Grotenhoutbos è un relitto della foresta demaniale con un imponente complesso di viali che serviva come area di caccia per i duchi di Brabante, poi signori di Turnhout. Questo dominio forestale - una grande area boschiva continua in un'area agricola aperta e intacta - è l'unico complesso forestale di tali dimensioni nelle Fiandre che è rimasto presente almeno dalla metà del medioevo. Nel bosco si trovano vegetazioni antiche vulnerabili con piante rare legate a un ambiente forestale.
