Non ci sorprenderà se Gilbert van Schoonbeke ha estratto anche qui la sua torba. Era un'area molto grande, grosso modo nel triangolo Antwerp - Geertruidenberg - Willemstad. Per quasi 5 secoli è stata estratta torba, che veniva principalmente trasportata attraverso Bergen op Zoom e Roosendaal. La ricerca di combustibili termina a Nieuwmoer nel 1743 quando Breda riceve l'ultima torba dai Maatjes vicino a Nieuwmoer. Davanti al caffè Den Turfsteker vicino alla chiesa c'è una bella statua di un tagliatore di torba.
