L'olandese Ferdinand Lousberg investì nell'industria tessile di Gand e divenne un uomo molto ricco nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo. Fu uno dei primi a installare motori a vapore nelle sue fabbriche. Diede l'incarico di creare questo edificio per accogliere i suoi operai. Riteneva che i suoi operai dovessero poter "respirare", da cui gli spazi ampi e la grande luminosità, caratteristiche tipiche dell'architettura in mattoni.
Dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale è diventato una casa di riposo.
Nel 1999 l'edificio è stato acquistato per essere trasformato in spazi ufficio e residenziali con splendidi loft.
