El holandés Ferdinand Lousberg invirtió en la industria textil de Gante y se convirtió en un hombre muy rico en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Fue uno de los primeros en instalar máquinas de vapor en sus fábricas. Dio la orden de crear este edificio para albergar a sus trabajadores. Creía que sus trabajadores debían poder 'respirar', de ahí los altos espacios y la abundante luz, características típicas de la arquitectura de ladrillo.
Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se convirtió en un hogar de ancianos.
En 1999, el edificio fue comprado para transformarlo en espacio de oficinas y vivienda con hermosos lofts.
