Il Aelmoeseneibos è utilizzato come foresta di ricerca dall'Università di Gand. Vogliono utilizzare la loro foresta climatica per scoprire se le foreste più ricche di specie immagazzinano effettivamente una maggiore quantità di CO2. La foresta climatica di 2,4 ettari assorbirebbe 20 tonnellate di CO2 all'anno. Questo è equivalente alle emissioni di CO2 di 6 abitanti. Il professor Kris Verheyen spiega che è necessario riforestare tre volte la superficie di Melle per compensare la protrusione di carbonio di tutti gli abitanti di Melle. La riforestazione per la compensazione della CO2 può quindi essere solo una piccola parte della soluzione.
