Il porto Het Gevaer è ben protetto in un contesto verde e tranquillo e dispone di diverse strutture per i diportisti. Con bel tempo, nel fine settimana sei il benvenuto nella mensa.
Il canale Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten è stato scavato tra il 1844 e il 1875 per aumentare il benessere nella regione.
I poveri terreni sabbiosi della Campine sono stati irrigati con l'acqua ricca di calcare della Mosa e l'industria ha prosperato grazie a nuove opportunità di trasporto via acqua tra Liegi e Anversa. Durante gli scavi si è incontrato uno strato di argilla che ha portato all'industrializzazione della regione. Lungo il canale si sono stabilite diverse fabbriche di mattoni e tegole.
