Un attento escursionista noterà sicuramente il bastone vescovile sulla torre della chiesa di Wulvergem. Questo bastone è il simbolo del santo patrono della chiesa, San Machutus, un santo che nel VI secolo arrivò dal Irlanda al continente. La leggenda racconta che Machutus, il santo patrono di Wulvergem, insieme ai suoi compagni fece una sosta su un'isola per celebrare la messa. Dopo la messa si resero conto di essere atterrati sul dorso di una balena. Questa balena giace in tutto il suo splendore, in pietra immortalata da Willem Vermander presso il punto di accoglienza del villaggio di Wulvergem.
