La imponente chiesa di San Martino appare per la prima volta nelle fonti storiche nel 1112. Originariamente si trattava di un edificio romanico con un torre ottagonale in pietra dura di Tournai. Nel corso dei secoli è stata ampliata fino a diventare l'imponente chiesa a cinque navate che oggi domina il mercato di Beveren.
I signori importanti di Beveren patronarono la chiesa. La lapide funeraria in rame del XVI secolo di Adolfo di Borgogna, signore di Beveren, ne è testimone. I genitori di Joos Vijd, il castellano Clais Vijd e Amelberga Van der Elst, fondarono nella chiesa la cappellania dello Spirito Santo. La chiesa di San Martino è dedicata al santo patrono di Beveren, il santo Martino di Tours. L'11 novembre continua a visitare i bambini di Beveren per distribuire dolcetti e leccornie.
