Nella torre di maltazione del sito della birreria di Koekelare è stato costruito il rinnovato museo Käthe Kollwitz attorno a una collezione delle sue opere grafiche. L'artista tedesca (1867-1945) è legata a questa regione perché suo figlio qui morì e realizzò il noto gruppo scultoreo "coppia di genitori in lutto" come monumento per i giovani soldati tedeschi caduti nel cimitero tedesco di Roggeveld a Esen.
Successivamente, questo cimitero fu trasferito nel cimitero di raccolta di Vladslo (per questo puoi andare al Deutsche Soldatenfriedhof Vladslo, qui a qualche chilometro di distanza), e con quel trasferimento anche le spoglie di Peter Kollwitz e le sculture.
