Per il vecchio municipio, questo monumento onora tutte le vittime della prima guerra mondiale del comune di Sint-Michiels. È sormontato dal suo santo patrono, San Michele, ed è un'opera del barone Henri Kervyn de Lettenhove. È anche l'uomo dietro le grandi esposizioni di Bruges "I Primitivi Fiamminghi" (1902), "Arte Fiamminga Antica" (1904) e "Il Vello d'Oro" (1907).
Durante la guerra scrive un libro, dedicato a suo figlio Jacques, sui danni che la guerra infligge all'arte in Belgio. Su commissione del governo belga (allora a Le Havre), organizza una mostra a Parigi su questo tema.
Il barone Henri progetta anche altri monumenti: la targa commemorativa per gli ex-alunni del Sint-Lodewijkscollege (oggi Zilverpand), l'urna per il Soldato Ignoto al Congress Column a Bruxelles e presumibilmente la pietra commemorativa sulla tomba di famiglia.
