Questa area è stata chiamata così per il laghetto di allevamento di pesci della famiglia Schuilens del XVIII secolo. A causa del drenaggio, questo laghetto è scomparso e l'agricoltura intensiva è diventata possibile. Dal 2011, Schuilenswijer ha subito una vera e propria trasformazione. Il rilievo naturale con stagni e torbiere è stato ripristinato. La transizione naturale dalle zone umide a quelle asciutte è cruciale per le specie di uccelli, farfalle e libellule che un tempo erano tipiche di questa regione. All'inizio dell'estate, Natuurpunt falcia i prati più asciutti e in tarda estate vi pascolano bovini.
Quest'area rappresenta un importante punto d'attraversamento tra le zone di brughiera nel Brabante olandese e le zone di brughiera nelle Noorderkempen Limburghesi. Nel frattempo, sono state osservate ben 76 specie di uccelli, 32 specie di libellule e 30 specie di farfalle diurne!
