Dietro a questo innocente scherzo si nasconde una realtà dura. Durante il picco industriale di Molenbeek scoppiavano regolarmente manifestazioni per migliori condizioni salariali e lavorative. Invece di fare un favore alla polizia, si combatteva seriamente contro di loro, il che portò il governo a decidere di costruire una caserma della gendarmeria lungo il canale. Oggi, questa ex caserma è conosciuta come Klein Kasteeltje.
